십자가에 못박히신 그리스도의 영광

요한복음 19:16-42

요한복음 19장 30절 “예수께서 신포도주를 받으신 후 이르시되 다 이루었다 하시고 머리를 숙이시고 영혼이 돌아가시니라.”

무언가를 끝내 본 적이 있습니까?

무언가를 완성했을 때의 기쁨과 만족을 경험해본 적 있습니까?

무언가를 끝내서 다시 해도 되지 않아도 되는 그 기쁨을 아십니까?

얼마나 좋은 느낌입니까!

요한복음에서 요한은 십자가 위에서 예수님의 마지막 말씀이 “다 이루었다” 라고 기록하고 있습니다.

그것은 하나님 아버지께서 맡기신 일을 다 이루시고 우리의 구원을 완성하신 예수 그리스도의 승리의 함성이었습니다.

그것이 예수님께 얼마나 만족스러운 일이었을까요!

그리고 예수님께서 우리를 위해 이루신 일을 믿는 우리에게는 얼마나 놀라운 일입니까!

오늘 우리는 사도 요한이 직접 목격하고 기록한 그리스도의 십자가를 경험할 것입니다.

사도요한은 우리가 예수님께서 이루신 일을 믿고 그의 이름을 통해 생명을 얻도록 기록하였습니다.

오늘 말씀을 통해 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님의 영광, 그분이 당신을 위해 성취하신 일을 보고 그분의 이름으로 생명을 얻게 되기를 바랍니다.

제 1 장 : 그리스도의 십자가, 16-27절

어제 Eberhard Gross 목자님의 말씀에서 우리는 하나님의 영광이 육신이 되어 예수님이 되었음을 배웠습니다.

영원하신 창조주이자 전능하신 하나님이 이 땅에 오셔서 인간 가운데 거하시며 육신이 되셨습니다.

얼마나 영광스러운 일입니까!

예수님께서는 죽은 자를 살리시고 나병환자를 고치시고 귀신을 쫓아내는 등 영광스러운 일을 많이 하셨지만

그의 영광의 시간은 오늘 본문에서 찾을 수 있습니다.

그것은 인류 역사상 가장 영광스러운 사건이었습니다.

이 영광스러운 하나님은 인류를 위해 가장 놀랍고 가장 강렬한 하나님의 사랑을 보여주시기 위해 자신을 낮추실 것입니다.

그는 십자가에 못 박힐 것입니다.

사도 요한이 기록한 예수님의 십자가 형을 같이 봅시다.

16절 상반 절을 보십시오. 마침내 빌라도는 예수님을 십자가에 못 박도록 그들에게 넘겼습니다.

빌라도는 예수를 고발할 근거를 찾지못해 풀어 주려고 했지만 적대적인 유대인 군중은 빌라도에게 계속해서 예수를 십자가에 못박으라고 압력을 가했습니다.

“그를 십자가에 못 박게 하소서!” 빌라도는 예수님을 십자가에 못 박아 달라는 그들의 요청에 어안이 벙벙했습니다.

그는 가장 놀라운 질문을 했습니다.

“너희 왕을 십자가에 못 박기를 원하는가?”

왕을 십자가에 못박는 것은 전례가 없는 일이었습니다.

도둑, 강도, 반란군들이 십자가에 못 박혔습니다.

왕들은 영예를 얻고 섬김을 받고 절을 받았습니다.

하지만 왕 되신 예수님께 이런 일이 생긴 것입니다.

16-17절을 보십시오. “그래서 군인들이 예수님을 맡게 되었습니다.

예수님께서 자기의 십자가를 지고 히브리 말로 골고다, 해골이라 하는 곳에 가셨습니다.”

왕이신 예수님께서는 군인들에 의해 중한 범죄자처럼 끌려가셨습니다.

이 일이 있기 전, 예수님께서는 많은 고난을 받으셨습니다.

예수님께서는 오랜 심문과 채찍질로 고초를 당하셨고 가시 면류관에 찔리고 얼굴에 뺨 맞음을 당하셨습니다. (19:1-3)

그런 와중에 요한은 예수님께서 그의 십자가를 직접 지고 가셨다고 기록합니다.

나무 십자가의 무게는 50-140kg 정도 나간다고 합니다.

예수님께서는 누구든지 자기를 따르려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 따라야 한다고 가르치셨습니다.

예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 주신 지극히 무거운 십자가를 지고 가셨습니다.

그는 그것을 골고다까지 짊어지고 가셨습니다.

18절을 보십시오. “저희가 거기서 예수를 십자가에 못 박을쌔 다른 두 사람도 그와 함께 좌우편에 못 박으니 예수는 가운데 있더라.”

요한은 마치 범죄 현장을 보고하는 사람처럼 예수님께서 십자가에 못박힌 사건을 사실대로 기록합니다.

그가 사실대로 기록한 것은 우리가 사실대로 믿기를 원했기 때문이었습니다.

그곳에서 그들은 그를 십자가에 못 박았습니다.

히브리어로 골고다라는 장소가 있었습니다.

십자가에 못박는 사람들이 있었습니다 – 로마 군인들입니다.

십자가에 못 박히신 예수님이 있었습니다.

그는 가운데 있었습니다.

요한은 평생 동안 그 장면을 결코 잊지 못했을 것입니다.

그가 어떻게 잊을 수 있었겠습니까?

예수님은 하나님 아버지로부터 온 은혜와 진리가 충만한 분이었습니다.

요한은 의로우신 예수님과 함께 하며 놀라운 기적들을 직접 보고 체험하였습니다.

예수님은 그를 사랑하시고 그의 모든 연약함을 감당해주신 분이었습니다.

지금 그의 눈 앞에서 예수님께서 정죄받은 죄인처럼 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다.

당시에 많은 사람들이 십자가형에 대해 매우 잘 알고 있었기 때문에 사도 요한은 십자가 처형에 대한 부연 설명을 하지 않습니다.

하지만 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히셨을 때 그는 몸의 가장 연약한 부분인 손과 발에 긴 쇠못이 박히는 것을 경험하셨습니다.

십자가 위에 있는 동안 그의 몸은 근육이 다 찢기고 뼈가 모두 어그러질 정도로 늘어졌습니다. (시 22:14)

특히 숨쉬는 것조차 고통스럽고 힘들었습니다.

숨을 쉬기 위해 예수님께서는 못 박힌 발에 모든 체중을 싣고 일어나야만 했는데 그 고통은 말로 할수 없이 큰 고통이었습니다.

그 고통이 견디기 힘들면 다시 그의 체중을 손과 손목에 실어야 했는데 그러는 동안은 숨을 쉴수 없었습니다.

그는 이 과정을 긴 시간 동안 수없이 반복하였습니다.

수백 년 전에 시편 기자는 십자가에서 예수님의 고통에 대해 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “내 마음은 촛밀 같아서 내 속에서 녹았으며.”

이사야는 십자가에 달리신 예수님의 모습을 이렇게 예언했습니다 – “그 얼굴이 타인보다 상하였고 그 모양이 인생보다 상하였으므로 무리가 그를 보고 놀랐거니와.” (이사야 52:14)

네 명의 복음서 저자들은 예수님의 십자가 형에 대해 각기 다른 관점으로 기록하고 있습니다.

그러나 네 복음서 모두 19절에 기록된 한 가지 세부 사항에 대해서는 모두 일관되게 기록하였습니다.

“빌라도가 패를 써서 십자가 위에 붙이니 나사렛 예수 유대인의 왕이라 기록되었더라.”

십자가에 못박힌 사람에게는 처형 이유를 설명하는 패를 십자가에 붙이는 것이 관례였습니다.

다른 사람들은 그들이 한 행위들로 인해 십자가에 못 박혔습니다.

예수님은 결백하고 죄가 없으셨습니다.

하나님은 빌라도에게 예수님께서 그가 누구인가인 정체성 때문에 십자가에 못박혔다는 통찰력을 주셨습니다.

나사렛 예수 유대인의 왕

이 표지판은 히브리어, 라틴어 및 그리스어의 세 가지 언어로 작성되었습니다.

이 세 가지 언어는 당시의 전 세계, 즉 모든 인류를 대표하였습니다.

예수 그리스도는 온 인류를 위해 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다.

우리가 인간적인 관점에서 이 이야기를 보면 불의에 의한 슬픈 이야기처럼 보입니다.

하지만 사도 요한의 시각으로 보면 결코 비극적인 이야기가 아닙니다.

예수님을 십자가에 보낸 것은 빌라도도, 유대인 폭도들도, 혹은 단지 인류의 악만도 아니었습니다.

하나님께서 예수님을 십자가에 보내셨고 모든 예언들을 성취하셨습니다.

사도 요한은 이번 말씀에서 세번이나 예언이 성취되었음을 기록합니다.

하나님께서는 세밀하고 아주 작은 부분까지 영광스러운 뜻을 이루셨습니다.

23-24절을 보십시오.

십자가에 못 박힌 사람들은 군인들에 의해 발가 벗겨졌습니다.

예수님의 옷을 취한 군인들은 각각 한 몫씩 네 몫으로 나누었습니다.

솔기 없이 만들어진 속옷만 남았습니다.

그들은 그것을 찢지 않고 그것을 얻을 사람을 제비뽑기로 결정하기로 했습니다.

이것은 예수님께 너무나 치욕적인 순간이었습니다.

십자가에 못 박힌 것도 모자라 치욕적으로 그의 모든 옷들은 벗겨졌고 네명의 악한 군인들이 그의 속옷을 두고 제비뽑기 하며 노는 것을 지켜봐야 했습니다.

그 순간에 그는 얼마나 비참하게 느껴졌을까요.

그의 손과 발이 십자가에 못박힌 채 몸을 가리거나 군인들이 하는 일을 막을 수 있는 방법은 아무것도 없었습니다.

그는 도살장으로 끌려가는 양과 같았습니다.

이 끔찍한 장면 속에서도 사도 요한은 예언이 성취되는 것을 보았습니다.

24절을 보십시오.

이는 성경에 “저희가 내 옷을 제비 뽑나이다” 한 것을 응하게 하려 함이러라.

그리하여 군인들이 이런 일을 하였습니다.

요한은 군인들이 거의 1000년 전에 하나님께서 예언하신 대로 행하고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

그리하여 군인들이 이런 일을 하였습니다.

그들의 악행은 단지 그들의 임의에 의한 행동이 아니라 하나님께서 그의 아들, 예수님께 일어나도록 계획하신 일이었습니다.

모든 존엄성과 모든 옷을 잃은 그는 이제 가장 가까운 사람들을 떠나는 슬픔을 경험합니다.

십자가 가까이에는 예수님의 어머니를 포함한 4명의 여신도들과 자신을 예수님이 사랑하시는 사도라고 밝힌 요한이 있었습니다.

그들은 예수님께 매우 귀한 사람들이었고 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히신 곳까지 따라가기까지 한 예수님께 가장 충성된 사람들이었습니다.

우리는 그들이 예수님의 고난을 지켜보며 당한 내면의 고통을 단지 상상만 할 뿐입니다.

예수님은 그들을 보시고 위로하십니다.

어머니에게는 “여자여 보소서 아들이니이다” 라고 말씀하시고, 요한에게는 “보라, 네 어머니라” 라고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님께서는 그들이 무엇이 필요한지 보셨고 그들을 돌보셨습니다.

십자가 위에서도 사랑하는 이들을 돌보시는 예수님의 깊은 사랑을 통해 우리는 그의 영광을 봅니다.

십자가 형을 생각할 때 그것은 매우 잔인하고 끔찍합니다.

너무 잔혹해서 이것은 처벌수단으로 금지된지 오래입니다.

하나님께서 이 모든 것을 관철하시고 통제하신다면 왜 그는 그의 독생자를 보내서 의도적으로 이렇게 고난을 당하게 하고 죽게 했을까요?

예수님이 왜 오셨고 어떤 목적으로 십자가에 못 박히셨는지를 생각해보면 이 모든 것이 죄와 관련이 있음을 알 수 있습니다.

성경은 예수님이 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원하러 오셨다고 말합니다. (마 1:21)

예수 그리스도는 죄를 위하여 고난을 받으셨습니다(벧전 3:18).

예수 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으셨습니다(고전 15:3).

예수 그리스도는 속죄 제물이 되셨습니다(롬 3:25).

그는 우리 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이십니다. (요 1:29)

하나님께서 예수 그리스도를 십자가에 보내신 이유는 죄 때문입니다.

죄는 하나님과 사람 사이에서 가장 심각한 문제입니다.

로마인들은 노예, 반란군, 강도 등을 처벌하기 위해 십자가형을 사용했습니다.

처벌은 가혹했습니다.

하나님께서 독생자 예수님을 십자가에 보내셨을 때 그는 죄를 벌하셨습니다.

하나님께서는 예수님께 우리의 죄에 대한 진노를 쏟아 부으셨습니다.

예수님께서는 우리의 죄를 짊어지 셨습니다.

거룩하신 하나님 앞에서 우리의 죄는 얼마나 중합니까.

예수님께서 십자가에 달리셨을 때 그는 우리의 죄 때문에 육체적인 고통을 당하셨을 뿐만 아니라 그보다 더 큰 영적인 고통을 당하셨습니다.

우리의 죄를 짊어지기 위해 예수님께서는 하나님께 버림받으셨습니다.

고통 중에 그는 “나의 하나님 나의 하나님 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까”라고 부르짖었습니다.

우리를 죄에서 구원하시기 위해 예수님은 자신이 아는 가장 소중한 것, 즉 하나님 아버지와의 교제를 잠시 포기하셨습니다.

예수님께서 우리를 위해 죄가 되신 그 순간, 하나님께서는 독생자 예수님을 외면하셨습니다.

우리의 죄는 얼마나 끔찍하고 하나님은 얼마나 거룩하신지요!

종종 우리는 우리의 죄 문제를 보지 못하고 다른 사람들과 비교하며 우리 자신을 정당화합니다.

그러나 성경은 “모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하더니”라고 말합니다.

선의 기준은 하나님의 영광입니다.

하나님의 영광을 볼 때 자신이 얼마나 죄인인지 깨닫게 됩니다.

이사야는 보좌에 앉으신 하나님을 보았을 때 그가 입술이 부정한 사람이고 하나님 앞에서 망할 수 밖에 없는 자라는 것을 깨닫습니다.

그는 정죄받은 사람이었습니다.

제자들은 예수님이 풍랑을 잔잔케 하시는 하나님이심을 알고 그분과 함께 같은 배에 앉았다는 사실을 알고 두려워했습니다.

악과 죄를 미워하시는 거룩하신 하나님의 손 안에 있는 죄인이 된다는 것은 얼마나 두려운 일입니까!

우리가 하나님 앞에서 우리의 죄를 스스로 감당해야 한다면 감히 우리가 하나님 앞에 설 수 있겠습니까?

우리가 하나님 앞에 서는 그 날이 얼마나 두렵고 떨리겠습니까.

감사하게도 하나님은 십자가에서 우리 죄의 무거운 짐을 대신 지도록 예수님을 우리 대신 보내주셨습니다.

우리는 스스로에게 물어봐야 합니다. 그가 왜 그렇게 했습니까?

왜 하나님께서는 자신의 아들을 포기하고 우리를 위해, 나를 위해 희생 하도록 하셨습니까?

저는 결코 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. 여러분도 절대 그렇게 할 수 없습니다.

다른 어떤 신도 그렇게 하지 않을 것입니다.

그러나 그렇게 하신 하나님이 계십니다.

하나님은 거룩하신 만큼 사랑도 많으십니다.

독생자를 내어 주셨을 때 그것은 인간에 대한 하나님의 크고 놀라운 사랑을 드러내신 행위였습니다.

하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라

우리 하나님이 그런 일을 하셨다니 얼마나 영광스러운 일입니까!

우리를 너무나 사랑하셔서 독생자도 아끼지 않으셨습니다.

우리를 향한 아버지의 사랑이 얼마나 크신지요!

인생에서 할 수 있는 가장 어리석은 일은 이 사랑을 거부하는 것입니다.

둘째로 어리석은 일은 그 사랑을 잊고 다른 사람들에게 전하지 않는 것입니다.

주님께서 이 시간 복을 주셔서 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 깊은지 깨달을 수 있게 하시기를 기도합니다.

제 2 장 (다 이루었다)

사도 요한은 예수님께서 우리에게 꼭 전달하고 싶었던 것 한 가지를 기록합니다.

30절을 다같이 읽겠습니다. “예수께서 신포도주를 받으신후 가라사대 다 이루었다 하시고 머리를 숙이시고 영혼이 돌아가시니라.”

요한은 예수님의 “다 이루었다”는 말씀이 신포도주를 받으신 직후, 그리고 머리를 숙이시고 돌아가시기 직전에 하신 말씀이라고 기록했습니다.

요한은 이 말씀을 예수께서 마지막으로 하신 말씀으로 기록하고 있습니다.

여러분은 어떤 말을 간절히 하고 싶었던 경험이 있습니까?

그래서 그 말을 한다면 온전한 평안을 누리고 죽어서도 여한이 없을 거라고 생각한 적이 있습니까?

그는 이 말을 너무나 간절히 하고 싶었기 때문에 그 말을 끝내고 직후에 머리를 숙이고 숨을 거두었습니다.

그는 왜 이런 말을 했으며 그 의미는 무엇입니까?

예수님이 다 이루었다고 하신 것은 아버지께서 그에게 맡기신 일을 다 이루었다는 뜻입니다!

예수님께서 완전하게 끝내셨습니다. 요한복음은 예수님께서 하나님께 보내심을 받은 이유가 그의 사명을 감당하기 위함을 강조합니다.

그의 일생동안 예수님께서는 자신을 보내신 하나님 아버지의 사명을 수행하였습니다.

심지어 그는 “나의 양식은 나를 보내신 이의 뜻을 행하며 그의 일을 온전히 이루는 이것이니라” (요 4:34)고 말씀하셨습니다.

그는 하나님 아버지를 사랑했고 아버지가 주신 일을 마치기 위해 살았습니다.

예수님께서는 그의 생명을 우리 죄를 위한 대속물로 바치기 위해 사셨습니다.

그는 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루기 위해 사셨습니다.

외로움과 종교자도자들의 핍박과 제자들의 실패에도 불구하고 말입니다.

그의 임무 완성을 염두에 두고 계속하여 나아가셨습니다.

그는 십자가를 감당하기 위해 단호하게 예루살렘으로 진군했습니다.

자기를 보내신 아버지께 온전히 순종하고 우리의 죄를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리신 그가 아버지께로 돌아가 그의 우편에 앉으셨으니 얼마나 기쁘시겠습니까!

다 이루었다고 하신 예수님의 말씀은 하나님의 독생자의 승리의 함성이었습니다!

첫 번째 아담과 달리 그는 사탄을 물리쳤습니다.

그는 죄를 정복했습니다.

3일 후에 다시 살아나사 사망의 권세를 이기셨습니다.

모든 민족이 그를 통해 복을 받을 것이라는 아브람에게 주신 하나님의 약속이 예수님을 통해 완성되었습니다.

그의 백성이 아닌 백성을 그의 백성이라고 부를 수 있으리라는 호세아에게 주신 하나님의 약속이 예수님을 통해 이루어졌습니다.

여호와께서 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키시리라고 이사야에게 하신 하나님의 약속이 예수님을 통해 이루어졌습니다.

그의 후손을 통해 영원한 왕국을 세우시겠다는 다윗에게 하신 하나님의 약속이 예수님을 통해 완성되었습니다.

유다의 사자가 승리했습니다 (계 5:5)!

예수님이 다 이루었다고 외쳤을 때 그것은 단지 자신의 성취만이 아니었습니다.

예수님께서는 여러분과 제가 이것을 알기를 갈망했습니다.

예수님께서 끝내신 이 일을 받아들이고 믿을 때 우리는 가장 복된 사람이 됩니다.

우리의 구원이 완성됩니다.

그리스어로 “다 이루었다”는 또한 완전히 지불되었다는 뜻입니다.

더 이상 부채가 없음을 보여주기 위해 비즈니스 문서나 영수증에 “다 이루었다”라고 종종 기록되었습니다.

예수님이 십자가에서 죽으셨을 때 우리의 죄의 댓가가 완전히 지불되었습니다.

예수님은 우리 죄에 대한 하나님의 모든 진노와 정죄를 담당하셨습니다.

그는 모든 것을 감당하셨고 다 이루셨습니다.

그분은 우리의 모든 죄에 대한 하나님의 진노의 마지막 한 방울까지 가져가셨습니다.

육체적인 고통과 굴욕을 당하시며 하나님 아버지께 버림받으시면서 까지 말입니다.

죄인들을 위한 하나님의 영광스러운 구원의 계획이 예수님을 통해 완성되었습니다.

여러분이나 제가 예수님께서 하신 일에 추가할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.

우리가 더이상 할 일이 없습니다.

우리 스스로 고통을 가할 필요도 없습니다.

그분은 우리 죄의 값을 단번에 완전히 지불하셨습니다.

예수님께서는 우리를 대신하여 거룩하신 하나님의 공의로운 요구를 완전히 만족시켰고 하나님께서 맡기신 일을 완성했습니다. 하나님을 찬양합니다!

예수님이 우리 죄의 진노를 담당하셨기 때문에 그분은 우리를 위해 영광스러운 것 이상의 일을 하실 수 있습니다.

골로새서 1:22절은 말씀합니다. “이제는 그의 육체의 죽음으로 말미암아 화목케 하사 너희를 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우고자 하셨으니.”

우리는 얼마나 거룩하지 못하고 얼마나 흠이 많습니까!

우리는 매일매일 얼마나 잘못을 많이 하고 또 그때문에 책망 받아 마땅합니까.

그러나 하나님과 예수 그리스도를 인하여 찬양합니다!

예수님께서 십자가 달리실때, 그는 하나님의 어린양이 되셔서 우리의 죄를 지셨습니다.

예수님께서는 우리를 하나님 보시기에 거룩한 자로 세우실수 있습니다.

흠이 없고

책망할 것이 없는 자로

완벽합니다! 얼마나 영광스러운지요!

예수님께서 우리를 위하여 이루신 놀라운 은혜를 인하여 찬양합니다!

예수님께서 우리를 위해 하신 일 때문에 우리에게는 가장 안전하고 가장 영광스러운 미래가 있습니다.

우리는 우리가 어디로 가고 있는지 확실히 알 수 있습니다.

제자들은 예수님께서 자기들을 떠나신다는 생각에 괴로워했습니다.

그러나 그분이 십자가로 가셨기 때문에 그들은 괴로워할 필요가 없었습니다.

예수님께서는 그들을 위해 아버지의 집에 처소를 예비하기 위해 십자가로 가셨습니다!

얼마나 영광스럽습니까! 비록 여러분들이 지금 힘든 시간을 보내고 있다고 하더라도 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 하신 일 을 생각할때 그것은 일시적인 괴로움일 뿐입니다.

우리의 구원을 영원히 보장해 주신 예수님을 인하여 하나님을 찬양합니다.

예수님께서 하나님 아버지께서 맡기신 일을 이루셨기 때문에 우리의 구원은 확실합니다.

그것은 80% 확률로 20%는 운에 맡기는 것과는 차원이 다른 것입니다.

예수님께서 십자가에서 하신 일을 믿는 믿음 없이는 결코 우리의 구원을 확신할 수 없습니다.

예수님께서 100% 다 이루셨고 하나님 아버지께서 맡기신 모든 것을 완성하셨고 우리의 죄에 대한 하나님의 진노를 온전히 감당하셨기 때문에 우리는 100% 확신할 수 있습니다.

우리가 100% 확신할 때 모든 의심, 모든 두려움, 내일에 대한 모든 염려, 모든 죄책감과 정죄감이 영원히 사라질수 있습니다!

하나님을 찬양합니다! 우리는 천국으로 갈때까지 자유롭게 살아계신 하나님을 기쁨과 평안으로 섬길 수 있습니다.

누가 우리의 구원을 보장했습니까?

당신의 성취였습니까?

아니요, 예수 그리스도께서 다 이루셨습니다.

그분이 모두 이루셨습니다. . 그분이 모두 지불했습니다.

그분은 하나님의 의로운 요구를 모두 이루셨습니다.

그는 자기 목숨을 바쳤습니다. 그분은 자기 피를 흘리셨습니다.

그리고 그는 우리는 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 세우실 것입니다.

그가 언제 이것을 했습니까?

우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 우리를 위해 죽으셨습니다.

우리가 하나님의 원수 되었을 때.

우리가 죄와 반역의 삶에 빠져 있을 때 그분은 우리를 위해 피를 흘리셨습니다.

우리는 그런 자격을 받을 만한 일을 결코 한 적이 없습니다.

우리는 하나님의 진노를 받아 마땅했습니다.

하지만 우리가 예수님께서 하신 일을 믿을 때 그 은혜로 인하여 우리는 구원을 받았습니다!

이것은 최고의 소식입니다!

그것은 복음의 좋은 소식입니다!

그는 해냈습니다! 다 이루었다!

예수님께서 우리를 위해 하신 일을 기억할 때 우리도 그분 안에서 승리하는 삶을 살 수 있습니다!

우리 인간적인 상황이 이상적이지 않아도 감사하는 사람으로 살 수 있습니다!

우리는 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 정체성 때문에 행복하고 만족할 수 있습니다.

예수님이 사랑하신 사람들! 그분이 우리를 용서하신 것처럼 우리도 다른 사람을 용서할 수 있습니다.

우리가 그분의 은혜를 거저 받은 것처럼 우리도 거저 줄 수 있습니다.

우리를 향한 예수님의 은혜를 붙잡을 때 우리 삶의 모든 문제는 그분 안에서 해결될 수 있습니다.

어젯밤 우리는 예수님께서 어떻게 중풍병자를 구원하시고 치유하셨는지에 대한 메시지를 들었습니다.

예전에 저는 그 중풍병자와 같았습니다.

저는 정말 선하게 살고 싶었고 제가 해야 할 선을 알고 있었지만 선한 일을 할 힘이 없었습니다.

저는 제 삶에 대한 운명적인 생각으로 가득 차 있었습니다.

이것은 저의 언어습관에 나타났습니다.

저는 수년 동안 심한 말더듬을 겪었습니다.

이 때문에 누구에게도 명확하게 말을 할수 없는 큰 고통을 겪었습니다.

그러던 어느 날 마가복음 5장을 공부하면서 예수님의 은혜가 제 마음에 와 닿았습니다.

저는 전혀 쓸모없는 귀신 들린 사람을 구원하기 위해 대가를 치르신 예수님을 보고 충격을 받았습니다.

저는 이것을 도무지 이해할 수 없었습니다.

너무나 놀라운 일이 아닐수 없었습니다. 이 사람은 그럴만한 가치가 없었습니다! 아무짝에도 쓸모없는 사람이었습니다.

이를 통해 하나님께서는 저의 눈을 뜨게 하셨습니다.

저는 예수님께서 어떤 대가를 치르더라도 기꺼이 구원해 주셨던 그 비참한 죄인이었습니다.

저는 어떤 선한일을 한적이 없었습니다.

제 안에 선한 것이 없었습니다.

하지만 예수님은 기꺼이 십자가에 달려 저의 죄를 위해 목숨을 바치셨습니다.

그분은 저의 죄 때문에 고난을 당하시고 죽으셨습니다.

이 예수님은 어느새 저에게 참된 영광으로 오셨습니다!

저는 더 이상 자신을 고통받는 자가 아니라 축복받은 자라고 생각하게 되었습니다.

제가 그분의 선하심을 보게 되었을 때, 스스로 선해지려고 노력하는 무거운 짐이 사라지고 말았습니다.

고린도전서 1장 26-31절을 인생 핵심요절로 잡게 되었습니다.

비록 제가 연약함들 때문에 교회를 떠나고 싶었지만 하나님께서는 이처럼 나약하고 미련하고 아무것도 없는 저를 택하셔서 당신의 영광과 선하심을 나타내셨습니다.

그리스도를 알기 전에 제가 가장 싫어했던것은 다른 사람들 앞에서 말하는 것이었습니다.

그러나 그 후 하나님은 저에게, 그렇습니다, 주님의 마음을 주셨습니다.

저는 그분의 선하심과 영광에 대해 증거하기 위해 입을 열어 말을 하게되었습니다.

저는 현재 워싱턴 UBF 지부장으로 섬기고 있습니다.

이 메시지를 준비하기 전에 저는 두 가지 문제로 고민했습니다.

하나는 제가 이 일을 감당할 만한 재질이 못된다는 것이었고 다른 하나는 제가 아무리 해도 결코 충분하지 못할 것이라는 생각이었습니다.

저는 하나님께서 왜 제가 이 일을 하도록 부르셨는지 의아해했습니다.

그러나 하나님께서는 이 말씀을 통해 제게 말씀하셨습니다 --- 다 이루었다.

나는 너의 재능이나 능력이나 선함 때문에 너를 부른 것이 아니다.

나는 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 전하라고 너를 불렀다.

내가 벌써 모든 것을 다 했다! 그러니 충분하다.

이를 통해, 하나님께서는 저의 기쁨과 영혼을 새롭게 하셨습니다.

여러분의 삶의 과정 어디에 있든지, 선교의 삶이 어디에 있든지간에 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 붙들 수 있기를 기도합니다.

그분은 충분하십니다! 당신의 문제가 무엇이든지 그분안에서 해답을 찾으실 것입니다.

예수님께서는 “다 이루었다”고 말씀하신 후 머리를 숙이시고 숨을 거두셨습니다.

예수님의 사명은 완수되었고, 그리스도께서 자신의 생명을 내어주실 때가 왔습니다.

누구도 그것을 빼앗을 수 없었습니다.

예수님은 자신의 뜻대로 자신의 생명을 버리셨습니다.

그분은 죄인들을 위해 자신의 생명을 쏟으시고 자신을 보내신 아버지께로 돌아가셨습니다.

우리 주 예수 그리스도는 얼마나 영광스럽습니까!

하나님의 완전하고 영광스러운 계획 안에서 하나님께서는 죄인들을 자신과 화목케 하시기 위해 그분의 아들 예수를 이 땅에 보내셨습니다.

예수님께서는 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 이루시고 우리의 모든 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린양이 되셨습니다.

다 이루었다. . 요한은 여러분이 이것을 믿게 하려고 십자가에 못 박히신 일을 기록했습니다.

이것을 믿습니까?

하나님께서 여러분이 이 모든 권능과 사랑의 행위를 믿고 예수님의 이름으로 생명을 얻도록 도와주시기를 바랍니다.

The Glory of the Crucified Christ

John 19:16-42

KV John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Have you ever finished something?

Do you know the joy and satisfaction in completing something?

Something that you finished so that it never has to be done again?

How great it is.

In John’s account of Jesus’ crucifixion, he writes that Jesus’ last words on the cross were --- “It is finished.”

It was the shout of victory by Jesus Christ who finished the work His Father gave him and completed our salvation.

How satisfying it was to Jesus!

And how great it is for us who believe in His finished work for us.

Today’s account of the crucifixion of Christ is written by the apostle John who was an eyewitness.

He writes so that you may believe in Jesus’ finished work and have life in his name.

Through today’s message may you see the glory of the crucified Jesus, what He accomplished on your behalf and have life in His name.

Part One (The crucifixion of Christ, verses 16-27)

In yesterday’s message by Eberhard Gross, we found that in Jesus the glory of God became man.

The eternal creator almighty God came and dwelt among men and became flesh.

How glorious it was!

Though he did lots of glorious things --- raising the dead, healing lepers, driving out demons, etc.

The hour of his glorification could be found in today’s passage.

It was the most glorious event in human history.

This glorious God would humble himself to do the most amazing, most loving, most powerful act for mankind.

He would be crucified.

Let’s see John’s account of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Look at verse 16a. Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

Though Pilate found no basis for a charge against Jesus and tried to free him, the hostile Jewish crowd kept pressuring Pilate to crucify Jesus.

Crucify him! Pilate was dumbfounded at their request to crucify Jesus.

He asked a most remarkable question.

“Shall I crucify your king?”

To crucify a king was unheard of.

Thieves, robbers, insurrectionists were crucified.

Kings were honored, served and bowed down to.

But this was what happened to King Jesus.

Look at verses 16-17. “So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.”

King Jesus was led like a hardened criminal by soldiers.

Prior to this, Jesus had suffered so much.

He was surely worn down from long trials, a flogging, crowns of thorns twisted and put on his head and blows to the face (19:1-3).

Yet, John writes that Jesus carried his own cross.

A wooden cross was said to weigh anywhere from 100 - 300 pounds.

Jesus had taught that if anyone would follow after him he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow him.

Jesus was taking up His cross that His Father gave Him as exceedingly heavy as it was.

He was carrying it all the way to Golgotha.

Look at verse 18. “There they crucified him, and with him two others --- one on each side and Jesus in the middle.”

John writes his account of the crucifixion as a matter of fact like a man reporting a crime scene.

He writes it as a matter of fact so you may believe it as a matter of fact.

There they crucified him.

There was a place – in Hebrew Golgotha.

There was someone doing the crucifying – the Roman soldiers.

There was Jesus being crucified.

His position was in the middle.

In all of his life, John probably never ever forgot that scene.

How could he?

The One who came from the Father full of grace and truth.

The Righteous One whom he had been with and seen perform miracle after miracle.

The One who had loved him and bore all of his weaknesses.

Now this same Jesus was being crucified like a condemned man.

When John wrote this account of the crucifixion everyone was very familiar with it so he doesn’t explain it.

But when Jesus was crucified he experienced long iron spikes driven through his hands and feet, the most tender parts of the body.

While on that cross, his body was stretched to the point where all of his muscles were likely torn, all of his bones out of joint (Ps 22:14).

To even breathe was especially painful and cumbersome.

To take a breath, Jesus would have had to stand up and place all of his weight on his nailed feet which would have caused excruciating pain.

When it was too much to bear he would then place all of his weight back on his hands and wrists but be unable to breathe.

He would go back and forth in this way for hours.

Hundreds of years earlier the Psalmist told of Jesus’ pain on that cross --- “my heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.”

Isaiah foresaw His appearance on the cross – so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness (Is 52:14).

The four gospel writers pointed out different things in their accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Yet all of them share the one detail shown in verse 19.

“Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.”

It was customary for a man being crucified to have a notice fastened to the cross stating the reason for his execution.

While others were crucified for their deeds.

Jesus was innocent and sinless.

God gave Pilate insight that Jesus was being crucified for who He was.

Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

This sign was written in three languages, Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

Together, they represented the entire world at the time, all of mankind.

Jesus Christ was crucified for all of mankind.

When we look on this story from human perspective it looks like another sad story of injustice.

But we see from John’s account that this was anything but that.

It was not Pilate who sent him, nor the Jewish mob nor was it just the evil of mankind.

It was God who sent His son Jesus to that cross and was fulfilling Scripture.

Three times in this passage, John mentions so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

It was God who was fulfilling His glorious will in even the smallest details.

Look at verses 23-24.

When a person was crucified, he was stripped naked by soldiers.

The soldiers took his clothes and divided them into 4 shares, one for each of them.

Only the seamless undergarment remained.

They did not tear it but decided by lot who would get it.

It was a dreadful moment for Jesus.

Not only was He crucified but in his humiliation all of his clothes were taken and he was left to watch 4 evil soldiers play games over his undergarment.

How vulnerable he was made at that very hour.

With his hands and feet nailed to the cross, there was nothing he could do to cover himself or keep the soldiers from doing what they did.

He was like a lamb led to his slaughter.

Even in this horrifying scene, John saw Scripture being fulfilled.

Look at verse 24.

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.”

So this is what the soldiers did.

John saw that the soldiers were doing exactly as what God had prophesied nearly 1000 years earlier.

So this is what the soldiers did.

The horror was not just a random act of evil but what God had planned for His Son to undertake.

Having lost all of his dignity and all of his clothes, he then experiences the sadness of leaving those closest to him.

Near the cross were 4 women including his mother and John who identified himself as the apostle whom Jesus loved.

They were people who were very precious to Jesus and most loyal to Jesus even following him to the crucifixion site.

One can only imagine the pain inside as they watched Jesus suffer on the cross.

Jesus sees them and comforts them.

To his mother he says “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”

Jesus saw their needs and took care of them.

Jesus' deep love to care for those he loved, even on the cross, shows us his glory.

When we look at the crucifixion we see a very repulsive scene.

It was so cruel, it has long been banned as a means of punishment.

If God was in control, why did He send His Son to purposefully suffer and die like this? How could he do that?

If we look at why Jesus came and for what purpose he was being crucified we see that it all had to do with sin.

The Bible says Jesus came to save His people from their sins (Mt 1:21).

Jesus Christ suffered for sins (1 Pe 3:18).

Jesus Christ died for our sins (1 Cor 15:3).

Jesus Christ was an atoning sacrifice for sins (Ro 3:25).

He is the lamb of God who takes away our sin (Jn 1:29).

God sending Jesus Christ to the cross had everything to do with sin.

Sin is the most serious issue between God and man.

The Romans used crucifixion to punish slaves, insurrectionists, thieves, etc.

The punishment was harsh.

When God sent Jesus (His own Son) to the cross, he was punishing sin.

He was pouring out His wrath against our sins on Him.

He was bearing our sins.

How terrible are a man’s sins before a holy God.

When Jesus was on the cross, he was not only suffering physical pain for our sins but of much greater suffering was the spiritual pain.

In bearing our sins, Jesus was forsaken by His Father.

In his agony he cried out --- “my God my God why have you forsaken me.”

In order to save us from sin, Jesus momentarily gave up the greatest thing he ever knew – fellowship with His Father.

At that point, when Jesus became sin for us, the Father turned away from even his own Son.

How awful is our sin and how holy is our God!

Often we are blinded in this world to see our sin problem and when we compare ourselves to others we can justify ourselves.

But the Bible says, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”

The standard of goodness is the glory of God.

When you see the glory of God one realizes just how sinful they really are.

When Isaiah saw God sitting high on the throne, he was ruined for he was a man of unclean lips.

He was a condemned man.

When the disciples realized Jesus was God who calmed the storm and they were sitting in the same boat with him, they were terrified.

How terrible it is to be a sinner in the hands of a holy God who hates evil and sin!

If we have to bear our own sins before God, how could we stand?

How horrible would be that day we stand before the Father.

Thankfully at the cross, God sent Jesus in our place to bear the heavy weight of our sins.

We must ask ourselves, why would he do that?

Why would he give up His own Son and let him do that for us? For me?

I could never do that. You could never do that.

No other god would do that.

But there is a God who did that.

As holy as God is, he is also so loving.

When he gave His Son, it was an act that revealed His great amazing love for man.

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

How glorious is our God that he would do such a thing!

In His love for us, he did not even spare His one and only son.

How truly great the Father’s love for us!

The most foolish thing you can ever do in your life is to reject this love.

The 2nd is to forget it and not pass it on.

May the Lord bless you to see how deep the Father’s love for us really is.

Part Two (It is finished)

From John’s account, there’s one thing Jesus really wanted to communicate as well.

Let’s read verse 30. “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

John writes that the words “It is finished” was said right after receiving the drink and just before bowing his head and giving up his spirit.

John records these words as the last words spoken by Jesus.

Have you ever desired to say something really badly?

That after you said them you could be totally at peace and even die?

He so desired to say this that afterwards he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Why did he say this and what did it mean?

When Jesus said it is finished it meant that the work the Father sent him for was accomplished!

It was complete. John’s gospel emphasizes that Jesus was sent by His Father to do His works.

In all of his life, Jesus was on a mission from God the Father who sent him.

He even said “my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (Jn 4:34).

He loved his father and lived to finish the work His father gave him.

To give His life as a ransom for our sins.

To fulfill His father’s will.

Despite His loneliness, despite the opposition from the religious leaders, despite the failures of His disciples.

He kept going with this finished work in mind.

He had marched resolutely into Jerusalem to do this very thing.

Having perfectly obeyed the Father who sent Him and given his life for our sin, how exceedingly happy he must have been to go back to the Father and sit at his right hand!

When Jesus said it is finished, it was a shout of victory by the Son of God!

Unlike the first Adam, he defeated Satan.

He conquered sin.

3 days later he would rise again and defeat the power of death.

God’s promise to Abram that all peoples would be blessed through him was complete.

God’s promise to Hosea that a people not his people could be called his people was complete.

God’s promise to Isaiah that the Lord would lay on Him the iniquity of us all was fulfilled.

God’s promise to David to establish an eternal kingdom through His descendant was complete.

The Lion of Judah triumphed (Rev 5:5)!

When Jesus shouted it is finished, it was not just his own achievement.

But he longed for you and I to know this.

When we accept and believe in Jesus’ finished work, we become the most blessed people.

Our salvation is made complete.

In Greek “it is finished” also means paid in full.

It was often written on business documents or receipts to show that a debt was no longer owed.

When Jesus was dying on the cross the ransom for our sins was being paid in full.

Jesus was taking on all of God’s wrath and condemnation for our sins.

He finished taking it on.

He took every last drop of God’s wrath for every last one of our sins.

The physical pain, the humiliation, even being forsaken by the Father.

God’s glorious plan of salvation for sinners was made complete.

There’s nothing you or I could add to it.

No work we could do.

No pain we could ever inflict upon ourselves.

He paid the full price of our sins once and for all.

He totally satisfied the righteous requirements of a Holy God on our behalf and completed the work God gave him to do. Praise God!

Because Jesus took on the full wrath of our sins, He is able to do something beyond glorious for us.

Colossians 1:22 says, “But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.”

How unholy we are. How many blemishes do we have!

How much wrong can we be accused of every single day.

But praise be to God and Jesus Christ!

That when Jesus was on that cross, he was the lamb of God who took away our sins.

He is able to present us holy in God’s sight!

Without any blemish.

Without any accusation.

Perfect! How glorious!

Praise the Lord for what Jesus accomplished on our behalf!

Because of what He has done for us we have the most secure, most glorious future.

We can know for certain where we are going.

The disciples were troubled at the thought of Jesus leaving them.

But because He was going to the cross, they didn’t need to be troubled.

He was going to the cross to prepare a place in His father’s house for them!

How glorious! You may be very troubled now, but because of what Christ has done for us it is just a momentary trouble.

Praise God for Jesus who has secured our eternal salvation with the Father forever.

Because Jesus completed the work His Father gave him, our salvation is certain.

It is not 80% sure and 20% left to chance or hope.

Apart from faith in Jesus’ finished work we can never be certain of our salvation.

But because he 100% finished the work, completed all that the Father required of him, taking on his full wrath for our sins, we can be 100% confident.

When we are -- all doubt, all fear, all worry about tomorrow, all guilt and condemnation can be banished forever!

Praise God! We are free to serve the living God joyfully and peacefully until he takes us home.

Who secured our salvation?

Was it your accomplishment?

No, Jesus Christ finished it.

He did it all. He paid it all.

He fulfilled all of God’s righteous requirements.

He laid down his life. He shed His blood.

And He will present you perfect, blameless and without accusation before the Father.

When did he do this?

While we were still sinners, He died for us.

While we were God’s enemies.

While we were engrossed in a life of sin and rebellion against Him, He shed his blood for us.

There’s nothing we did to deserve it!

We deserved God’s wrath.

But by His grace when we believe His finished work, we are saved!

This is the best news!

It is the good news of the gospel!

He has done it! It is finished!

When we remember what Jesus has done for us we too can have a victorious life in Him!

We can live as thankful people even if our human situation is not ideal!

We can be happy and satisfied in our identity in Christ.

The Ones Jesus loved! Just as He has forgiven us we can forgive others.

Just as we have freely received His grace, we can freely give.

When we hold onto the grace of Jesus to us all of our life problems can be solved in Him.

Last night we heard the message on how Jesus saved and healed the paralytic.

In my life I was like that paralyzed man.

Though I really wanted to do good and knew the good I should do, I was powerless to do any good thing.

I was full of fatalism about my life.

One clear manifestation of this was in my speech.

I had a terrible stutter for many years.

Because of this, I suffered greatly not being able to even speak clearly to anyone.

Then one day as I studied Mark 5, the grace of Jesus touched my heart.

I was shocked by Jesus who paid the price to save a demon possessed man in whom there was no good.

I could not understand it.

It blew my mind. This man was not worth it! He was good for nothing!

From this God opened my eyes.

I was the miserable sinner Jesus was willing to save at any cost.

I had no good works.

There was nothing good in me.

Yet, Jesus was willing to go to the cross and give His life for my sins.

He suffered and died for my own sin.

This Jesus suddenly became truly glorious to me!

I no longer thought of myself as one who was suffering but one who was blessed.

When I found His goodness, my own burden of trying to be good enough was lifted.

I received 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 as my life key verses.

Though I wanted to leave the church because I was not good enough, God chose me – a weak and foolish thing, a thing that was not – to reveal His glory and goodness.

Before knowing Christ, the last thing I wanted to do was open my mouth to speak before others.

But afterwards God gave me a yes, lord heart.

I accepted to use my mouth to speak about His goodness and glory.

I’m currently serving as the director of Washington UBF chapter.

Before preparing this message, I was struggling with 2 issues ---

I am not good enough to do this and nothing I could do was ever enough.

I wondered why did God call me to do this?

But God spoke to me through the passage --- It is finished.

I didn’t call you because of your talent or ability or goodness.

I called you to preach Christ crucified.

I have already done it! It is enough.

Through this, God renewed my joy and spirit.

I pray that wherever you are in your life or mission life, you too may hold onto Christ crucified.

He is enough! Whatever your problem you will find your answer in Him.

After saying “It is finished”, Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

His mission accomplished, the time had come for Christ to surrender his life.

Nobody took it from him.

Jesus gave up his life of His own will.

He had poured out his life for sinners and he was returning to the Father who sent him.

How glorious was our Lord Jesus Christ!

In God’s perfect, glorious plan he sent His Son Jesus to reconcile sinners to himself.

He perfectly fulfilled God’s will and became the lamb of God who takes away all of our sins.

It is finished. John wrote his account of the crucifixion so that you may believe this.

Do you believe it?

May God help you to believe this all powerful and all loving act and have life in His name.
